Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Prisms Using Tetraterpyridine Porphyrin

Supramolecules have been extensively studied due to their wide range of applications namely in the fields of energy production, catalysis and drug delivery. Supramolecules are normally made using the porphyrin as a scaffold for Suzuki coupling to perform the ligand assembly. The purpose of this research is to synthesize a 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)phenyl)-7H,8H-porphyrin ligand starting from isopthalaldehyde. The ligand was determined to have conformational isomers through a 1H and 2D COSY NMR.  Once the ligand was synthesized and confirmed through mass spectrometry and NMR, Zinc(II) was coordinated with the terpyridine to perform self-assembly to create a library of supramolecular prisms, including trimers, tetramers and pentamers. Trimers have the highest abundance among the mixture of structures, indicating that trimers were the most energy favorable assembled structures.
